Social media marketing could be set to become a major player in the marketing world after social media was predicted to "take another jump" in popularity.

Daniel Chubb, chief executive officer at web 2.0 news website Online Social Media, stated that the recent Social Media World Forum showed brands are interested in being involved with social media websites.

He said: "Mobile devices and apps will help social networking take another jump. Smartphones will bring billions of impressions that the desktop computer cannot.

"The boost is coming to take things to a whole new level."

Mr Chubb added that social media websites such as Twitter and Facebook may be able to make custom deals with large firms.

He was speaking after research by mobile measurement firm Ground Truth found that more than half of the time spent surfing the internet via a mobile phone is on social networking websites.

Another recent survey found that three-quarters of internet users are a member of at least one social media website.

Research company InSites Consulting discovered that 77 per cent of the people in the UK who have internet access are signed up to a social networking site such as Facebook or Twitter.

The firm stated that this translates to around 940 million social media users around the world. ADNFCR-2033-ID-19740893-ADNFCR
