Online shoppers searching for discount

Search marketers should be aware of what looks set to attract online shoppers in 2009 - a bargain.

A senior figure at Google UK has confirmed the trend which data gathered in the run-up to Christmas suggested - many UK consumers are searching for any reductions they can get their hands on.

According to figures from Google, the search term "discount vouchers" saw a 94 per cent increase over a 30-day period between November and December last year.

Retail industry leader at Google, Peter Fitzgerald, has told Retail Week that the emergence of reduction-related search terms points at online shoppers' thirst for savings.

He said: "In the past 90 days we have seen changing behaviour as consumers look for discounts, voucher sites and price comparison sites."

Meanwhile, Google has dismissed reports which claimed that conducting two searches on its engine was tantamount to boiling a kettle in terms of CO2 emissions.
