Nearly one third (30 per cent) of industrial sector firms spent more than half of their marketing budget online in 2008, according to a survey by GlobalSpec.
The number of industrial companies spending more than half of their budget online was also found to have increased by ten per cent compared to 2007.
Respondents to the specialised search engine's survey spent an average of 37 per cent of their marketing budgets on digital campaigns.
Some 26 per cent claimed that determining what digital marketing strategies work remains a challenge.
Meanwhile, a recent survey by Shape the Future found that one quarter of UK businesses (25.1 per cent) believe that websites will be one of the most important marketing items during the next year.
More than half of businesses surveyed (58.9 per cent) stated that they would be increasing spending on their website over the next 12 months.
Less than half (18.2 per cent) indicated that they would be increasing their direct marketing spending over the same period.
